Nasal aspirators can give babies much-needed relief from congestion, but can sometimes be intimidating to use. Start by placing your baby on their back. Robert Quillin, M.D., a board-certified pediatrician at Pediatrix® Newborn Services of Texas, suggests adding a couple drops of saline before using a nasal aspirator to thin out mucus, limit nasal irritation and prevent damage to the inside of the nostril. Then gently insert the tip into your baby's nostril and release the bulb or turn on the suction for an electric version. After removing the mucus, dispose of it and repeat the process for the other nostril.
