Parents of toddlers learning to walk often use baby head protectors to cushion falls and prevent injury. "They claim to help stop or decrease the chances of sustaining a significant head injury,” said Todd Zimmerman, D.O., a pediatric emergency medicine physician at Pediatrix® Emergency Medicine of Nevada. However, experts advise avoiding these products, as minor bumps and falls are a normal part of learning to walk and crawl. Using cushion-like pillows can also increase the risk of SIDS if a child falls asleep while wearing one. “It is known that for younger children and babies, the use of anything that covers the head, like a baby head protector, can result in an increased risk of SIDS,” said Dr. Zimmerman. “The best way to help keep your baby safe is to keep a close eye on them at all times and give them a designated space to play where there are not heavy or tall objects that can fall on the baby,” he explained.
