If you've ever wondered about the number of bones babies are born with, newborns usually start life with around 275 to 300 bones. Infants experience remarkable growth, and extra cartilage and bone facilitates their rapid development and flexibility. “The changes from cartilage to bone over time allows for bone growth from infancy into adulthood,” explained Robert Quillin, M.D., a pediatrician at Pediatrix® Newborn Services of Texas. Building strong baby bones depends on simple essentials. “A healthy diet combined with sunshine and activity are vital to the growth of healthy bones,” said Dr. Quillin. Foods rich in calcium and vitamin D are great for growing healthy baby bones, he said. “But don’t forget protein and minerals too,” added Dr. Quillin. Active play is also important. “The stress of activity allows muscle to put healthy strain on bones, which supports continued skeletal growth,” said Dr. Quillin.
