On her last day of preschool in 2019, Shaylie Edwards of Reno, Nevada was hit by a car in a crosswalk as she walked to the park. She suffered a myriad of life-threatening injuries. “When I saw her initial scan, I tried to be optimistic, but I’m a realist and her injuries were so severe,” said Kristina Deeter, M.D., pediatric intensivist and medical director at Pediatrix® Critical Care and Hospitalists of Nevada, who described the scene in the emergency room that day as traumatic as a team of doctors circled the little girl. Dr. Deeter has seen people with less severe injuries not have happy endings, but Shaylie and her family got one.
