Many women notice their bottoms becoming flatter during pregnancy or postpartum, a change often called “mom butt.” This pregnancy-related change is often linked to core weakness, pelvic floor issues and shifts in how the body is used and carried during motherhood. According to Kimberlee Coleman, M.D., a board-certified OBGYN at Obstetrics and Gynecology of Southeast Florida, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group, losing muscle tone in the glutes during pregnancy is both common and normal, and it can be reversed. Dr. Coleman said you can help prevent “mom butt” during pregnancy with exercise and wearing maternity bands or belts to support the uterus. “This can help correct posture and decrease the chance of weakening the glute muscles,” she said.
