What Does the PUMP Act Mean for Breastfeeding Moms?

The PUMP for Nursing Mothers Act mandates employers to offer nursing mothers reasonable break time to express breast milk for their child and a private, non-bathroom space at work that ensures privacy and prevents interruptions from colleagues and the public. “It is essential for a [parent] to consistently and routinely pump milk in order to provide an adequate milk supply for their infant,” said Jenelle Ferry, M.D., a neonatologist and director of feeding, nutrition and infant development at Pediatrix® Neonatology of Florida. The “most detrimental impact,” she said, is not having a large enough milk supply to feed a baby.”
