Well-Fitting Masks Protect Against the Omicron BA.5 Subvariant

The highly contagious BA.5 Omicron variant has parents wondering whether double masking can help reduce transmission. Zachary Hoy, M.D., a pediatric infectious disease specialist at Pediatrix® Nashville Pediatrix Infectious Diseases, says the most effective protective measure is a mask that fits well. "The CDC recommends a properly fitted mask, so if a good fit is guaranteed, then double masking is not necessary," said Dr. Hoy. "If there is a mask without a good fit, a disposable mask underneath a cloth mask on top can provide a better fit."
