Understanding Baby Sleep in the Womb

The Bump

Expecting parents may wonder whether babies sleep in the womb. Experts say they do – and quite a lot. Babies spend 90 to 95 percent of their day asleep by the time you’re 32 weeks pregnant, said Sarah Jordan, M.D., a board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist at Pediatrix® OB Hospitalists of Texas. In utero sleep helps regulate the hormonal and metabolic processes that support growth, “which allows baby to gain a healthy weight,” said Dr. Jordan. Babies are usually less active while sleeping in the womb. Still, they should not remain completely still for long stretches. “If you feel baby isn’t moving as much as normal, it’s important to have this evaluated by your obstetric provider rather than simply assuming baby’s sleeping,” advised Dr. Jordan.
