During pregnancy, hormonal changes occur that result in the relaxation of ligaments throughout the body, including the pelvis, often leading to discomfort and pain in the hips and back. As the pregnancy progresses and the uterus expands, the additional weight and pressure exerted on the pelvic area can further contribute to pain. Pregnancy pillows can help relieve the pain. “As you enter the second and third trimesters, you have the baby's weight to consider, which can put a strain on your back muscles and pressure on the pelvic floor,” said Jill Purdie, M.D., an OBGYN and medical director at Northside Women’s Specialists, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group.
