Labor shakes are involuntary shivers that occur during labor and immediately after birth. “Labor shakes feel very much like shivering when you’re cold, because physically your body’s doing the same thing,” said Sarah Morrow, CNM, a certified nurse-midwife at Pediatrix® OB Hospitalists of Texas. “It may feel overwhelming because it’s outside of your conscious control.” Labor shakes usually start when you enter the transition phase of labor, which is when you’re about 8 to 10 centimeters dilated, said Morrow. You may feel some shaking after getting anesthesia during an epidural or C-section as well. “When your brain suddenly can’t tell what temperature the lower half of your body is, it makes the assumption that you’re cold and starts to shake,” explained Morrow.
