Because babies’ skin is so delicate, even a little too much sun can quickly leave them uncomfortable and irritable. According to Brittany Middleton, M.D., a board-certified pediatrician at Pediatrix® Hospitalists of California, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends mineral sunscreen over chemical sunscreen. Chemical sunscreens work by absorbing UV rays through ingredients such as avobenzone or oxybenzone. “Evidence shows that these chemicals are absorbed into the body, are more likely to cause irritation or allergy, have environmental concerns and may cause hormonal defects,” explained Dr. Middleton. Since sunscreen isn’t recommended for babies younger than 6 months, it’s especially important to limit their sun exposure. Dr. Middleton recommends lightweight clothing and shade as sun protection. “Tightly woven, darker-colored clothing provides more protection,” she said.
