Reflux and Coughing in Pregnancy

Heartburn often happens during pregnancy, triggering a pesky cough. “It is relatively common for a persistent cough to end up being reflux,” said Tina Hendrick, M.D., an OBGYN at OB Hospitalists of Kentucky, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group. “Patients typically have a dry, annoying cough that fails all the typical remedies for a virus, allergies or asthma.” Fortunately, coughing from reflux generally resolves once the acid calms down and the irritation in your throat and stomach settles, said Dr. Hendrick. However, “patients should talk to their provider if conservative measures, such as OTC medications and dietary changes, do not alleviate the cough."
