The good news: most cheeses are safe to eat during pregnancy. If you’re craving cheese while expecting, the key thing to check is whether it’s pasteurized. Use caution with Brie, a soft, mold-ripened cheese. Pasteurizing the milk used to make mold-ripened cheeses greatly reduces – but does not completely eliminate – the risk of listeria, explained Brandi Fields, CNM, a certified nurse-midwife at OB Hospitalists of Ohio, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group. Contamination is still possible, so the safest approach during pregnancy is to choose pasteurized Brie and heat it to an internal temperature of 165°F. Fields noted that melting cheese alone does not guarantee it has reached a safe internal temperature.
