Postpartum Skin Care

Parents

The postpartum period can bring about several skin issues. According to Julie Charlton, CNM, certified nurse-midwife at Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialists of Georgia, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group, some of the most common skin problems experienced by postpartum parents are acne, dark areas (called melasma) and dry skin. Melasma is known as the “mask of pregnancy” and characterized by darkening of the skin, usually on the face. “For most women, it will fade in the months after delivery,” said Charlton. Stretch marks, or striae, also frustrate new moms. “These usually occur on the abdomen and breasts, but may also be present on the thighs, arms and buttocks,” said Charlton. “Genetic factors play a large factor in who will develop stretch marks.” To care for your postpartum skin, start by staying hydrated. “Remember that no matter what products you put on your skin, true hydration comes from inside your body,” said Charlton. Using sunscreen is essential for treating melasma. “A good strategy to reduce this discoloration is to use sunscreen to reduce the UV exposure from the sun during and after pregnancy,” explained Charlton.
