Sex after childbirth can be painful, cause bleeding or bring emotional challenges due to motherhood. These experiences are normal. Tania Lopez, CNM, certified nurse-midwife at Pediatrix® OB Hospitalists of Texas, advised being flexible and patient if intimacy doesn't go smoothly at first. "Birth often causes lacerations in the perineum or labia, and may even tear the muscle below the skin," she said. "Six weeks may not be the magical hour to resume intercourse; it may take more time to heal completely. Be prepared to postpone intercourse for a couple of weeks if at first you don't succeed."
