Massage isn't usually a priority after childbirth but having a professional postpartum massage offers valuable benefits. “Postpartum massage is beneficial for holistic recovery, which includes not just physical healing, but also emotional wellness,” said Sarah Morrow, CNM, a certified nurse-midwife at Pediatrix® OB Hospitalists of Texas. After birth, parents may be recovering from C-section incisions or vaginal tears. According to Morrow, massage can help scar tissue healing, but it’s important to find a professional who specializes in scar tissue repair or myofascial release. A type of massage therapy called lymphatic drainage can also help with swelling and water retention. “Many people experience swelling postpartum, and seeing someone trained in lymphatic massage can aid in reducing the swelling,” said Morrow.
