New RSV Vaccine Aims to Help Expectant Moms Protect Their Babies

Every year in the United States, approximately 2.1 million children seek medical care for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Recently, Pfizer has developed a groundbreaking RSV vaccine specifically designed for infants. The vaccine is administered to expectant mothers during pregnancy, offering protection to their babies. “Most children who contract RSV have mild cold-like symptoms and recover within a week,” said Jill Purdie, M.D., an OBGYN and medical director at Northside Women’s Specialists, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group. “However, some infants — particularly those who were born premature or have an underlying health condition like chronic lung disease or congenital heart disease — develop more serious symptoms.”
