Medical Experts Urge Caution, Not Panic, About Polio Outbreak

With concerns about a possible polio outbreak given the recent cases in New York, medical experts are advising people to be cautious but not so worried that it could become another pandemic. “It’s a disease that’s been considered eradicated for the most part,” said Zachary Hoy, M.D., pediatric infectious disease specialist at Pediatrix® Nashville Pediatric Infectious Disease. “With most people vaccinated and low circulating numbers, [you] should not be too worried.” Those who received the oral polio vaccine as child may wonder if they’ll need a booster. “People that have taken the oral polio vaccine versus the inactivated would still have appropriate immunity,” noted Hoy. “So it would not be recommended that they would have to get a polio booster.”
