A recent national poll revealed that 51% of kids use pacifiers, while about 25% suck their thumbs or fingers. Jenelle Ferry, M.D., a board-certified pediatrician at Pediatrix® Neonatology of Florida, says that this poll is in line with reality for many parents. “The poll seems consistent with what pediatricians are likely seeing in their clinics and discussions with parents,” she said. “A lot of taking care of babies and children involves ‘anticipatory guidance’ and discussions about appropriate use of pacifiers is often part of that.” Dr. Ferry offered tips to wean children from pacifiers and thumb/finger sucking successfully, including limiting pacifiers to just naps and bedtime, introducing other comfort objects and gradually decreasing how often the pacifier can be used.
