One indication that a baby is ready to use utensils is when they have developed the pincer grasp, which is the ability to pick up small objects using the thumb and index finger. This is a “crucial milestone” for utensil use, said Jenelle Ferry, M.D., a pediatrician and director of feeding, nutrition and infant development at Pediatrix® Neonatology of Florida. “Choose utensils that are lightweight and don't have sharp edges,” said Dr. Ferry. “Short, wide handles make it easier for small hands to grasp.” She suggested silicone spoons as a great first option since “they’re gentle on fragile gums and are made from non-toxic materials.” Dr. Ferry recommended starting with thicker foods, which are easier to scoop. “Yogurt, mashed avocado and mashed sweet potatoes can be easier to get onto a spoon,” she said.
