NyQuil is a common cold and flu medication, but those who are pregnant are generally advised to avoid it. “NyQuil is generally not recommended at any stage of pregnancy due to two main high-risk ingredients: alcohol content and phenylephrine,” explained Amber Chambers, CNM, a certified nurse-midwife at Melbourne Maternal-Fetal Medicine, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group. Chambers said pregnancy-safe alternatives may include diphenhydramine (Benadryl), loratadine (Claritin) or Zyrtec for a runny nose or sneezing, and single-ingredient dextromethorphan, such as Robitussin DM, for coughing. In general, “Always remember that no medication is 100 percent risk-free during pregnancy,” cautioned Chambers, adding, “The physiology of pregnancy alters how your liver and kidneys process drugs.”
