How to Tell if your Child Has RSV, the Flu, COVID-19 or a Cold

With several respiratory viruses on the rise this cold and flu season, many with similar symptoms, it can be difficult for parents to tell if their child has RSV, the flu, COVID-19 or a cold. RSV presents like a cold but a hallmark symptom is the significant amount of mucus it produces. For babies and toddlers, it can often lead to the development of bronchiolitis, according to Zachary Hoy, M.D., pediatric infectious disease specialist at Pediatrix® Nashville Pediatric Infectious Disease. “The most affected pediatric patients are those younger than 6 months,” said Dr. Hoy. “Bronchiolitis from RSV can cause trouble breathing where patients need oxygen support, IV fluids or close monitoring in the hospital.”
