How to Support Postpartum Moms

When a new mother says she's "fine," she may be quietly struggling with fatigue, stress or postpartum depression. Even in the absence of a formal diagnosis, “many new mothers feel very exhausted and overwhelmed,” said Anushka Chelliah, M.D., a board-certified maternal-fetal medicine specialist at Obstetrix® Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialists of Houston, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group. “They may feel lonely, or a loss of identity, given so much of themselves are consumed with motherhood.” Proactive check-ins can help. If she says she’s “OK” but something feels wrong, Dr. Chelliah recommends addressing the matter sensitively: “I know you, and you don’t seem fine – do you want to talk about what’s been hard?” It gives her the chance to open up without forcing it. If she chooses to share, Dr. Chelliah suggests brief responses like “I know this is really hard” or “I’m glad you told me.”
