How to Manage the 18-Month Sleep Regression

Sleep often becomes more difficult around 18 months, with toddlers struggling to fall asleep, stay asleep or settle for naps. The 18-month sleep regression “is a period of difficulty with sleep and bedtime in a child that had previously been doing well,” said Christopher Klunk, M.D., a board-certified neonatologist at Pediatrix® Neonatology of Texas. “It feels like backtracking.” To help manage the 18-month sleep regression, be consistent. Even though baby’s sleep is all over the place, keep sleep routines and structure in place, said Dr. Klunk. Additionally, ensure baby’s sleep space is cozy. “Check the room temperature, try a nightlight, a special blanket or stuffed animal or the door cracked open,” recommended Dr. Klunk. “Safe, secure and snuggly is the goal.”
