When choosing a protein powder during pregnancy, experts recommend selecting third-party certified products to help reduce the risk of contamination. Several sources indicate that plant-based protein powders are generally more likely than whey-based powders to contain heavy metals such as lead. “That just has to do with the absorption of heavy metals when it comes to plants versus the second pass that they get through animal products,” said Melanie Lagomichos, D.O., an OBGYN at Pediatrix® OB Hospitalists of Texas. Evidence on the benefits of collagen supplements during pregnancy is limited and mixed. “The problem with collagen – it is a protein, yes – but it’s an incomplete protein,” said Dr. Lagomichos. “It really doesn’t give you all of those essential amino acids that you need in the pregnancy alone.”
