It's perfectly normal if your baby usually falls asleep while feeding, as it’s a natural behavior. Whether it's at the breast or the bottle (or with a thumb), sucking is the primary way that young babies self-soothe, and they start doing this before they're even born, said Jenelle Ferry, M.D., board-certified neonatologist and director of feeding, nutrition and infant development at Pediatrix® Neonatology of Florida. The cuddling that comes with feeding also encourages sleep. "Feeding is generally a very comforting and soothing time for babies," explained Dr. Ferry. "Being close to caregivers and cuddling is also a safe and calming environment."
