Early Uptick in Respiratory Illnesses

An early surge in flu and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is causing increased emergency room wait times in Nashville, Tennessee. While The Children's Hospital at TriStar Centennial has been impacted, staff is managing the increase in patient volumes. “We’re definitely prepared to take care of the community at this point,” said Jennifer Simmons, M.D., pediatric hospitalist at Pediatrix® Centennial Hospitalist of Nashville. “While we are seeing an increase, we have been ready for this.” Dr. Simmons noted that just because a child has RSV doesn’t necessarily mean they will be severely ill. “The majority of cases of RSV, especially in older individuals and healthy people are simply mild colds, so it’s not something to worry about if your child has RSV. It’s more important how your child looks. Is your child having difficulty breathing? That’s when you need to worry.”
