Corticosteroids and Gestational Diabetes Risk

The belief that steroid use during pregnancy significantly increases the risk of gestational diabetes has become widely accepted. Now, a large cohort study is calling that assumption into question, with findings that may lead primary care providers to rethink patient counseling and monitoring practices. Sasha Andrews, M.D., a maternal-fetal medicine specialist at Obstetrix® of Colorado, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group, noted that early-pregnancy oral corticosteroid use opens an option many clinicians miss. "If a patient is taking corticosteroids early in pregnancy, then there is an option for an early glucose screening test, such as the 1-hour glucose tolerance test,” she said. “This can be done in the first trimester.”
