Compression Socks for Pregnancy

What to Expect

Compression socks are commonly worn during pregnancy to help alleviate swelling. “Compression socks are used during pregnancy to improve circulation, prevent varicose veins and reduce swelling (edema in the legs),” said Jill Hechtman, M.D., a board-certified OBGYN at OB Hospitalists of Florida, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group. According to Dr. Hechtman, as the uterus grows, it may place pressure on the veins in the legs, potentially reducing blood flow and leading to swelling. “In pregnancy, the body is at increased risk of blood clots,” she added, but compression socks have been proven to help. You’ll want to ensure your socks have at least knee-high coverage to promote the best level of circulatory support during pregnancy. “There are plenty of choices on the market, but what is most important is comfort. I recommend knee-high socks that have between 20-30 mmHg,” said Dr. Hechtman. “You don't want them too loose or too tight.”
