C-Section Recovery: What to Expect and How to Prepare

The Bump

Whether your C-section is planned or just a possibility, gathering a few key recovery essentials before your baby arrives can help you feel more supported and prepared. It’s natural to want to protect your incision after a C-section, especially from the pressure of your baby’s weight on your healing abdomen during feedings. Ashley Hedge, DO, an OBGYN at Pediatrix® OB Hospitalists of Texas, recommended using a breastfeeding pillow to help position baby so you’re not hunching over while nursing. A supportive pillow can also cushion your incision from your baby’s weight, making long feedings more comfortable. Many people begin to feel better within a few weeks, but full recovery often takes six to eight weeks. Dr. Hedge noted that recovery isn’t always linear – you may feel better one day, do a little too much and experience a flare-up in pain the next. Everyone recovers from a C-section at their own pace, so it's best to follow your health care provider’s guidance throughout healing.
