Here’s what to know about your 6-week-old baby. At this stage, many infants begin to appear more awake and interactive, often sharing their first genuine smiles. Known as social smiles, they're one of the earliest and biggest milestones in your baby’s social-emotional development, said Chris Klunk, M.D., a board-certified neonatologist at Pediatrix® Neonatology of Texas. These smiles "mark a clear positive response to faces, talking, eye contact or whatever other stimulation parents are offering up." How can you tell if a baby's smile is reflexive or social? "Because one happens with sleep and one in response to something fun, it shouldn’t be hard for parents to tell them apart," said Dr. Klunk.
