At about 47 weeks, your baby is learning to spend short stretches playing independently. Still, many parents feel they need to keep their baby engaged whenever they’re awake. "The key here is to be there when they need you," said Christopher Klunk, M.D., a board-certified neonatologist at Pediatrix® Neonatology of Texas. "They need to learn to feel secure enough in their attachment that they can wander away a little and look back and see that you are still there," said Dr. Klunk. Through independent play, babies begin making their own connections – like noticing how a ball moves or what happens when an object drops from a table.
