Even before babies can talk, they communicate in many ways. Beyond crying, gestures are one of the earliest signs of developing verbal communication. When your baby gestures, respond to what they’re trying to communicate. Christopher Klunk, M.D., a board-certified neonatologist at Pediatrix® Neonatology of Texas, recommends narrating your baby's world. "Keep on narrating what you are doing,” said Dr. Klunk. “'Mama is washing the dishes!' 'Dada is picking you up!' Look for signs of understanding and give them a chance to respond," he said.
