Before crawling, babies often prepare by rocking on hands and knees, moving backwards, spinning on their bellies or reaching for distant objects. All of this is practice. Crawling takes coordination, strength and confidence, and babies try several movements before mastering it. What are some ways to inspire this? "I feel like a broken record, but it all comes back to tummy time," said Christopher Klunk, M.D., a neonatologist at Pediatrix® Neonatology of Texas. "Tummy time strengthens the core and neck muscles, helping your baby roll, crawl, sit and eventually stand,” said Dr. Klunk. He recommended making tummy time engaging by placing toys or yourself just out of reach, setting up simple obstacles or hiding behind objects for your baby to find.
