At this age, your baby's hand movements become more accurate and intentional, paving the way for new exploration and interaction. Although waving is usually seen as a one-year milestone, many babies begin trying it earlier as their social awareness grows, “especially in the context of a baby mimicking the motion back at you,” said Christopher Klunk, M.D., a neonatologist at Pediatrix® Neonatology of Texas. “Waving is a fantastic precursor to other social skills,” said Dr. Klunk. “It communicates ‘hello’ or ‘goodbye’ non-verbally and can lead to your baby saying those words and connecting the act with the name of the person they are addressing.”
