By week 27, your baby’s improved strength and coordination, especially in the upper body, prepares them to reach the major milestone of sitting up. Christopher Klunk, M.D., a board-certified neonatologist at Pediatrix® Neonatology of Texas, said the best way to have them practice is tummy time. Once your baby wants to be upright, offer frequent supported chances to practice. “Supported sitting with your baby between your legs or your hands under their arms gives them an opportunity to practice,” said Dr. Klunk. “Make it fun and interesting. When you have them practicing supported sitting or doing tummy time, break out the toys and point out interesting things around the room. Give them the motivation to do it!” he said.
