The Pediatrix® Neonatology Grand Rounds series addresses pertinent controversial issues that influence the clinical practice of newborn medicine. Webinars are held on the first Wednesday of every month from 4 to 5 p.m. Eastern Time.
On Feb. 4, Fernando Moya, M.D., examines “Surfactant in the Preterm Infant.”
After this session, participants will be able to:
- Describe the pros and cons of different modes of surfactant administration.
- Summarize the clinical evidence supporting the different modes of surfactant administration.
- Explain the current status of using surfactant as a vehicle for delivering other agents into the lungs.

Fernando Moya, M.D., joined the Pediatrix Neonatology of Texas in 2023 and is a clinical professor in the Texas A&M School of Medicine. He graduated with maximum distinction and completed his pediatric residency at the Catholic University of Chile. He then completed his neonatology fellowship at the Yale University School of Medicine, where he also served as an assistant professor of pediatrics for several years. During his career, Dr. Moya was the endowed professor and director of the Division of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at the University of Texas-Houston and, more recently, the director of the Division of Wilmington Pediatric Specialties at the University of North Carolina.
Dr. Moya is board-certified in pediatrics and neonatal-perinatal medicine. He has been involved in clinical and translational research throughout his career and has served as the principal investigator for two pivotal trials that led to FDA approval. He has over 110 peer-reviewed publications and invited articles in Pediatrics, The Lancet, New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of Pediatrics, Pediatric Research, American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Journal of Perinatology, American Journal of Perinatology andSeminars in Perinatology, among other journals. Additionally, he has written 22 book chapters, has been a speaker for Specialty Review for over a decade and has given over 150 guest lectures in more than 25 countries.
