What to Know About Molar Pregnancies

Abnormal fertilization of the egg is called a molar pregnancy, which almost never results in a viable pregnancy. Molar pregnancies require prompt treatment to avoid immediate and long-term complications. "Immediate complications of molar pregnancies can include anemia from vaginal bleeding and hyperemesis gravidarum" (a form of severe morning sickness), said Sasha Andrews, M.D., a MFM specialist at Obstetrix of Colorado, part of Pediatrix Medical Group. "The high hCG levels can also cause abnormal thyroid function and ovarian theca lutein cysts." In rare cases, preeclampsia may occur, said Dr. Andrews.
