Teen Mental Health Cases on the Rise Amidst Pandemic

The social isolation of the pandemic is contributing to a nationwide rise in teen mental health cases. Dr. Dianna Brozyna, Pediatrix-affiliated pediatric hospitalist at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando, Fla., has seen a significant increase in hospital admissions for eating disorders, suicide attempts, psychosomatic episodes and nonaccidental trauma amongst young teens ages 11-14. “This year, we’ve had an exceedingly large amount of teenagers and pre-teenagers admitted for psychiatric reasons,” said Dr. Brozyna. “We think it’s because of this feeling of isolation, this feeling of fear that their family members are going to die or they’re going to die, and they can’t escape from bad situations.”
