Raising awareness about black maternal health

Black Maternal Health Week is recognized annually from April 11-17 to raise awareness about the inequality Black women face in pregnancy-related deaths. According to the Centers for Disease Control, Black women are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than white women. Contributing factors include systemic and medical racism, implicit bias and access to quality health care. “There are so many factors that need to be addressed and it’s not something that’s going to be fixed by one person, or one organization or one health care system,” said Sasha Andrews, M.D., of Obstetrix of Colorado, part of Pediatrix Medical Group.
