Breathable crib mattresses, made of materials like mesh, wool and cotton, may enhance a baby’s comfort by improving airflow and reducing heat retention. This promotes better sleep quality and minimizes the likelihood of waking up sweaty. But what about breathability? “Some mattresses are marketed as being breathable, with claims that if an infant were to roll over, they could continue to breathe with their face in a mattress made of more porous materials that allow air through,” said Jenelle Ferry, M.D., a neonatologist and director of feeding, nutrition and infant development at Pediatrix® Neonatology of Florida. “Unfortunately, there isn’t evidence to support these safety benefits.”
