Is Adult Cold Medicine Suitable for Children?

The recent shortage on children’s Tylenol and ibuprofen has left parents with limited options to treat their sick child, and some may consider giving adult cold medication. However, experts strongly warn against this. “Adult medicine has not been necessarily tested or approved for use in kids, so you’re putting your own child at risk for more complications,” said William Chu, M.D., pediatrician and medical director at Pediatrix® Primary + Urgent Care of Texas. Children often don’t require over-the-counter medications and most cases resolve on their own. “The research doesn’t show that there’s a lot of benefit to giving cough and cold medicines to kids,” said Dr. Chu. “Most of the time it’s more risky to give, and by giving adult medicines you’re only increasing the risk with none of the benefit.”
