Sports, such as football, are commonly associated with injuries. However, the players aren’t the only ones getting injured during practice or a game. Cheerleaders are at risk for injuries ranging from a sprain or broken finger to an ACL tear, broken limb, concussion or spinal injury. “You don’t have to hit something with your head to have a concussion,” said Katherine Labiner, M.D., a pediatric neurologist with Child Neurology Consultants of Austin, part of the Pediatrix® family. While spinal injuries are rare, they can happen. “Paralysis is always a risk in this,” said Dr. Labiner.
