Sometimes, feelings of sadness, worry or disconnection linger after having a baby. Many new parents experience postpartum depression, a common but often undiscussed condition. It frequently presents as a state beyond typical sadness. According to Anushka Chelliah, M.D., a board-certified maternal-fetal medicine specialist at Obstetrix® Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialists of Houston, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group, anxiety, tearfulness, guilt, hopelessness, panic and feeling overwhelmed are common experiences. Postpartum depression can also manifest as “inability to concentrate or focus on activities, feeling overwhelmed and poor decision making,” said Dr. Chelliah. If there is uncertainty about whether your symptoms meet the criteria for postpartum depression, experts recommend observing the duration and the extent to which these feelings affect daily functioning. If symptoms “persist after two weeks or become intrusive in the ability to complete activities of daily living or are involved with thoughts of hurting yourself or others, you need to seek medical attention,” said Dr. Chelliah.
