Twins with Rare Congenital Heart Defect Celebrate Milestone

Twins Asher and Xander Reyes recently celebrated their first birthday, a significant milestone in their battle with a rare congenital heart defect. The Reyes twins were born with congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries (CCTGA), in which the heart twists abnormally during fetal development and the ventricles are reversed. While CCTGA itself is rare, what makes this even rarer is that both twins have the condition but different versions of it, requiring different treatment. “We hope that they’ll have a good life and that they can run and play and do everything that they want to do,” said Katelyn Snyder, M.D., a pediatric cardiologist at Pediatrix® Cardiology of South Florida who cares for the twins. “They’re never going to get rid of me or a cardiologist, and they’ll probably need repeat surgeries.”
