Safe Swaddling Tips

Swaddling is a popular care method that helps soothe and comfort infants, though it’s common for caregivers to have questions about whether its safe. “In general, yes, swaddling is safe for newborn babies,” said Jenelle Ferry, M.D., a neonatologist and director of feeding, nutrition and infant development at Pediatrix® Neonatology of Florida. Dr. Ferry shared her top tips for swaddling safety, including only using thin, lightweight blankets; avoiding “crib size” blankets; always putting your baby on their back for sleep; making sure blankets aren’t too loose while at the same time, not restricting movement; and keeping any blanket material away from the baby’s face. Once baby outgrows swaddling around two months old, they can still be safely soothed. “A sleep blanket is a great next step after swaddling to ensure your baby is covered yet safe from loose blankets that increase suffocation risk,” recommended Dr. Ferry.
