Your 18-week-old is more expressive and curious, which can bring new illnesses. Even if your baby has had a cold or flu, croup is a virus that may still alarm new parents as it can present as a “barking” cough. Croup is often mild but knowing when to seek medical help is essential. “If at any point you are worried that your child is having trouble breathing, particularly at rest, they should be seen by a doctor,” said Chris Klunk, M.D., a board-certified neonatologist at Pediatrix® Neonatology of Texas. If you notice stridor/high-pitched wheezing, it’s time to have them evaluated. “It can be a sign of the airway starting to get too narrow for safe breathing,” explained Dr. Klunk. You also want to watch for a blue tinge to baby’s lips or fingernails, uncontrollable drooling and trouble swallowing or keeping down fluids. “Croup can progress quickly,” said Dr. Klunk. “And while most children do just fine, it can be dangerous if signs of a severe case aren’t recognized.”
