Neonatal Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) Course: Approach to the Crashing Neonate

Target Audience:

Neonatologists, neonatal fellows, pediatric residents, advanced neonatal care practitioners

Course Format:

8 Didactic Lectures + 8 Hands-on Stations

Course Overview:

Neonatal emergencies are time-sensitive and complex. Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) has become an essential tool in the bedside evaluation and management of the critically ill neonate. This one-day course focuses on the practical application of POCUS in the evaluation of the "crashing neonate” -- defined as a neonate with sudden or progressive hemodynamic or respiratory decompensation.

Participants will gain foundational knowledge and hands-on experience to immediately integrate POCUS into the neonatal intensive care setting.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand the role of POCUS in the evaluation of neonatal cardiorespiratory collapse.
  2. Perform focused POCUS exams to assess cardiac function, volume status, pulmonary pathology, and central line placement.
  3. Integrate ultrasound findings into clinical decision-making during acute neonatal decompensation.
  4. Demonstrate image acquisition and interpretation skills through hands-on practice.
