Newborn Hearing Screen Program

Mission Statement:

Pediatrix Newborn Hearing Screen Program is dedicated to early detection and intervention for newborns with hearing loss or deafness to better the quality of life for our children.

About Us

Pediatrix Newborn Hearing Screen Program (Pediatrix) is one of the nation's largest providers of newborn hearing screen services. We partner with hospitals to provide this valuable service to their newborn patients.

Our high quality newborn hearing screen program emphasizes primary care provider collaboration and audiology follow-up for babies identified with hearing loss as well as parent education and community involvement.

Our Goal

Our goal is to provide quality newborn hearing screen programs to identify babies with possible hearing loss. Pediatrix takes a progressive stance on providing quality newborn hearing screens to our patients and on behalf of our hospital partners. We actively participate in quality improvement initiatives designed to enhance the quality of the services that we provide. These initiatives include adhering to hearing screen guidelines from professional organizations such as the Joint Committee on Infant Hearing and staying abreast of cutting edge newborn hearing screen equipment and technology.

Our History

Gail Lim, ARNP, AuD, began the newborn hearing screen program at Pediatrix Medical Group in 1994, partnering with a South Florida hospital, to screen babies in their neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). In mid-1996, due to advances in hearing screen technology and increased awareness about the benefits of newborn hearing screens, Pediatrix began providing newborn hearing screens to babies in the NICU and Well Baby Nursery at hospitals across the United States.

Since then the number of hospital partnerships have grown to more than 300 hospitals in 29 states. Pediatrix has screened more than  three million babies for hearing loss. The program, long recognized as one of the largest newborn hearing screen programs in the United States, has identified more than 8,000 babies with hearing loss to date.
